FAQs and Help

We want your shopping and installation experience to be as smooth and rewarding as possible. We've provided a list of common questions and answers to help you.

About Our Murals

What materials are your murals printed on?

We offer seven mural material options! Please see our Mural Materials Information page for more details to help you make your choice.

Can I clean my mural?

Yes! Use a soft damp cloth to gently clean your mural. Do not use any chemicals as they could damage your wall mural.

Is my mural reusable?

While our murals are repositionable, we only recommend a single installation for one use.

Do you have any commercial grade, paste or pre-pasted murals?

Yes! We offer a traditional paste mural, Paste Smooth Matte #WQM, that is excellent for high traffic areas in commercial and residential indoor use, durable Type II Class A fire rated, low VOC, PROP 65 compliant, and anti-microbial.

We also offer a prepasted mural, PVC-Free Prepasted Matte #HPPVCF, for residential and commercial indoor use, durable Type II Class A fire rated, low VOC, PROP 65 compliant, anti-microbial, that easily applies with water. You can find more information about these and our other mural materials on our Mural Materials Information page.

Do you have murals that can be applied to rough surfaces?

Yes! Our mural material Adhesive Smooth Matte for Rough Surfaces #285. Please see our Mural Materials Information page and Product Installation Instructions for more information on applying to rough surfaces.

What sizes are available?

Our murals are made to your custom dimensions. You decide the size based on your measurements of your wall and if you want to cover the entire wall or just a portion of the wall. Once you decide on the photo you will use, our Image Crop Tool will take you through the steps of sizing the mural. See the FAQs section on uploading images and using the crop tool for more details.

Will my mural be in one big piece?

Our materials are 42", 54" and 60" wide, depending on the material you choose. Please see our Mural Materials Information page for details of each mural material. Your panels will be printed on the width of the material, in as many panels as it takes to complete your mural, with the last panel trimmed to the end of the mural. For example, if your wall is 10 feet wide, you will enter 120" for the width of your wall. If you order a mural with a material that is 54" wide, you will receive two 54" wide panels and one trimmed panel, all at the height you specified. You only need to tell us your exact wall width and height. We will work out the overlap and trim. Please see our Product Installation Instructions for more information on installing each mural material.

Can I use my own photo for my mural?

Yes! Our Custom feature lets you upload your own image to our site, then use our Image Crop Tool to size it to your dimensions. See the section on Uploading My Own Image in the FAQs for more details.

Can I use an image I found on the Internet?

There are two reasons why it is not recommended to use images from the Internet. First, they are not typically large enough for large format printing, therefore they don't have sufficient quality. Second, they usually require permission/consent to use the photo. If you're not sure you have permission, contact a Copyright attorney.

By uploading your image and using the Murals Decor Custom Wall Mural Service you represent and warrant that (1) you lawfully own or otherwise lawfully possess all necessary rights with respect to your image submission, (2) your image submission does not and will not infringe or otherwise violate any intellectual property or privacy right of any third party, (3) you have obtained written consent or permission to use the images and likenesses of every identifiable individual who appears in your image submission, and (4) you are not using this service for any unlawful purpose.

Murals Decor respects copyright laws and has the right to reject or refuse to print any images that do not follow copyright laws. Please make sure you own the rights or have permission to use any of the images you upload for us to print.

What if I measure incorrectly?

Always be sure to double check your measurements before placing an order! Accurate wall measurements are solely the customer's responsibility. Full instructions to ensure measurements are accurate are available in our Measurement Instructions page.

Installation and Removal

Can I install my mural myself, or do I need to hire a professional?

You can definitely install your mural yourself! Please see our Product Installation Instructions for a complete set of installation instructions for all of our mural products. We recommend having two people for installation.

How long will my mural stay up on my wall?

Proper preparation of your wall surface is key to the longevity of your mural. To insure your mural will last for many years to come, please follow the Product Installation Instructions for the material you choose. You will find preparation instructions to get you off to a great start! If a mural will be installed in a high traffic area, we recommend using our Paste Smooth Matte #WQM, a traditional paper applied with paste. For a kitchen or bathroom where steam or high humidity is present, we recommend using one of our four peel and stick papers.

Can I install a wall mural in a bathroom, kitchen, or a room with high humidity?

Yes! For a kitchen or bathroom where steam or high humidity is a present, we recommend using one of our four peel and stick papers. Follow the preparation and installation instructions carefully to insure the wall is dry and free of moisture and dust first.

Can I install a mural outdoors?

We have several mural materials that can be installed outdoors. Please see our Mural Material Information page for more details to help you make your choice!

How do I measure my walls?

For detailed instructions, please see our Measurement Instructions page.

How do I remove my mural?

Our peel and stick murals are simple to remove. Start with a top corner, gently and slowly pull down away from the wall at a 45 degree angle. Use a wet cloth or sponge to remove any residue that may be left on the wall. Our paste and pre-paste murals will need to be removed using traditional wallpaper removal procedures.

Will the wall mural damage my walls?

Our peel and stick murals are rated for clean removal for up to one year. Our paste and prepasted murals will need to be removed using traditional wallpaper removal procedures.

Choosing Images, Uploading Images, and Using the Image Crop Tool

How do I get started making my mural?

You can use a mural design from our site or use your own image. If you would like to choose a design from our site, there are two options:

Our exclusive designer murals are presented in the gallery collections on the site. You can search for a specific theme or topic by clicking on the magnifying glass located in the top right corner of the Home page, or you can choose a gallery collection from the drop down menus at the top of the Home page. We have over 1,000 exclusive designer murals to choose from!

Our curated collection of stock photos can be accessed from the top of our Home page by clicking on Stock Photo Search. You will be directed to a page with a search field where you can search by theme or topic. We've carefully selected over 10,000 stock images for you to choose from!

You can also create a mural using your own photo with our Custom option, located at the top of the Home page. Click on Custom and you will be directed to upload your image.

I've picked my photo from the website. Now how do I make it a mural?

Exclusive Designer murals from our galleries and Custom murals option will have a red Design Product button that will take you into the ImageCrop Tool.

Stock Photo Search images will open up directly into the Image Crop Tool. If you want to see a different photo, simply click "Back to Search" at the top left of the Crop Tool window. You will automatically go back to the point which you chose your photo.

Can I crop an image to fit my space?

Yes! The Image Crop Tool will allow you to move the image within the width and height specifications you set so you can choose how the image is cropped.

How do I upload my own image?

Our Custom Mural option will allow you to upload your own image to use for your mural. Simply choose "Custom" from the top menu on the Home page. The red Design Product button will take you into the Image Crop Tool. Follow the prompts to upload your image. Your file should be no more than 300MB and the maximum resolution you can upload is 150dpi.

How do I know if my photo is high enough quality for a mural?

Large format printing for wall murals requires high resolution images to print well. Digital SLR cameras are the best choice for taking high quality photos for use as murals. We recommend a minimum of 8 megapixels, with 12 megapixels being ideal for large size murals. Newer smartphones and tablets with high-resolution cameras may provide images that are good quality, but may not be ideal for reproduction for large format printing for murals. Digital SLR cameras are ideal. Images submitted to Murals Decor for reproduction as a mural need to be full size at 150dpi.

How do I use original artwork or an old photograph for a mural?

Scanning your old photos or original artwork can provide you with an image that can be used for a mural, as long as the scan is done properly. Use a high quality scanner and make sure the scanner surface is clean of debris and scratches. Scan at 300dpi. If you are unsure how to properly scan, you can take your photo or artwork to a local professional scanning service in your area, such as a print shop or graphics studio.

You can also take a photo of the original artwork or old photo with a high quality digital camera  with a minimum of 8 megapixels, with 12 being ideal for large size murals. It is important to have no distortion in the photo. Try to be at eye level looking straight forward to the object you are photographing, by either propping the object straight up vertically or laying it flat horizontally. Make sure you approve of the quality of the photo before uploading it to the Image Editor.

Which file formats are accepted for uploading my own image?

You can upload JPG and PNG files.
